After the very first geocache was hidden south-east of Portland in Oregon, USA, back on the 3rd of May 2000, it didn’t take long before Australia had it’s very first cache – hidden on the 18th of May 2000 by Paul Edwards {kerravon} in the Lane Cove National Park. The hide consisted of a white bucket with a lid, that was buried in the ground. Sadly on the 19th of August 2001 the bucket was taken away by a NPWS ranger due to the coordinates being in a protected area. The cache has since become a virtual to continue it’s history.
To celebrate 25 years of geocaching fun in Australia, Geocaching NSW is inviting the geocaching community to come together and celebrate the placement of the first geocache in Australia: GC3E – Lane Cove.
The Community Celebration Event will be held on Sunday the 18th of May 2025 from 10am until noon, at the Commandment Rock picnic area in Lane Cove National Park.
