    Nowra invasion event

NowraBridgeGeocaching NSW welcomes all to our first regional get together, in the south coast town of Nowra.

It doesn't matter if you are an old hand or a Geonovice, come along and join us for a gathering in the Nowra Showgrounds.

The event is an idea 'borrowed' from our geocaching friends in Canberra, who regularly head out of the big smoke and hit a regional NSW town.

So now it's time to bring geocachers around the state - including the Sydney Basin - and down to the home of South Coast geocaching.

You may decide to head down for the weekend and search for the more than 80 geocaches within 25 kilometres of town - stretching from Kiama down to Jervis Bay.

    History, mysteries and mega caches

p6270214 300x200At our June 2010 Geocaching 101 event, EcoDave from EcoTeam took us back to the early days of geocaching - a time when 'Mega' caches were the rage. These caches were months in the planing, full of hype, mystery and suspense. You'll hear about the famous Get Smart interactive cache story, Achilles and one or two of the major caches that were firsts in their genre.

If you missed it, don't fret. Below is a video recording of EcoDave's presentation. It goes for 49 minutes, but contains some gems of information.

A big thank you to EcoDave for putting together an interesting and inspiring presentation.

The date for the first Annual General Meeting has been set for Sunday 2 August 2009. It will be held at the Carlingford Bowling Club, starting at 10 am. The meeting will start with reports from the President, Treasurer and Membership Officer. This will be followed by a Q&A session, culminating with the election of the committee for 2009/2010.

Topics put forward include paperless geocaching, GSAK and geocache construction. I will post a list of topics and presenters on the website in the next week or two. If you would like to present a workshop, please let me know.

We are asking everyone to submit their ideas for the design. The logo will appear on one side and an iconic NSW location will appear on the other.

Don't leave it to the last minute.

      Geocaching celebrations

It's been a busy few months with a number of events held across the state in the first part of the year. The highlights were the 10 Years! events (Sydney and Wollongong) and the Oz Mega Wagga mega event.

The mega event saw close to 700 attendees and was a lot of fun. Geocaching NSW would like to congratulate the Riverina Caching committee for putting together a fantastic event. You've set an excellent standard for future mega events in the country, whenever and wherever that should be.

      10 years! Sydney event

Celebrate the 10 year anniversary of geocaching close to the birthplace of geocaching in Australia.

May 2010 is the tenth anniversary of geocaching. To mark the occasion, Geocaching NSW is hosting a 10 Years! event close to Australia's first ever geocache - placed only two weeks after the first 'geostash' in the United States.

The event will take place at Baker's Flat picnic area in Lane Cove National Park. Entry to the area is via Lady Game Drive.

Festivities will commence at 11 am. More details soon. Watch this listing to receive updates, including any wet weather contingency plans.

BBQ facilities are available at the picnic ground, along with toilets and limited shelter.

A group photo will be taken at 12 noon in order for the event (and you) to receive the 'special' 10 year event icon. Please wear something 'Australian' for the photo. Be creative; green and gold, inflatable kangaroos, flags, etc.

The event is expected to wind up around 2 pm

Apart from the festivities, the event is a perfect opportunity for new geocachers to pick up some tips on finding and hiding geocaches. Don't forget you can also swap geocoins and travel bugs at the event.

Please register your intention to attend by leaving a 'will attend' entry at http://coord.info/GC268BJ

      Clean Up report 2010

For the second year running, Geocaching NSW hosted CITO (cache in, trash out) events as part of Clean Up Australia Day.

These events help build and strengthen our relationship with the community - one of the association's goals.

This year saw members clean up two sites: William Lawson Reserve, Blacktown and Bonnie Vale camp ground in Royal National Park.

The Blacktown CITO, coordinated by Phil Marriott from Ruffasgutts4x4, saw more than 30 geocachers pull on the gloves. Rubbish collected at the site included several bags of recycables and half a dozen shopping trolleys.
